The father of Impressionism was also the father of two sons.  Jean Armand Claude Monet was born in August of 1867 to Monet and his companion, Camille Doncieux.  The birth of the boy brought with it both joy and conflict.  Monet and Camille were not married at the time of the child’s birth, though they did finally marry in 1870, when Jean was nearly 3.  When Monet’s father learned of the pregnancy he was furious, he did not approve of Camille and threatened to cut off Monet’s allowance if he did not abandon her and the baby.  Monet was separated from Camille for the majority of the pregnancy, perhaps due to his father’s objections; however, he managed to be present in Paris for the birth and the registration of the boy.

Monet left for northern France following the child’s registration, leaving Camille on her own.  Finally on April 2, 1868, Jean was baptized at Sainte Marie des Batignolles.  The baptism was a slap in the face to Monet’s father and signified Monet’s acceptance of the boy.

Monet’s first painting of his firstborn was completed in 1867-1868.  The large canvas, titled, The Cradle, depicts the infant lying wide awake and content in his crib while a nurse is seated next to him.  Another painting of Jean as a baby in his crib was painted in 1868, The Artists’ Son.  Three times Monet painted Jean sitting at the dinner table: in his Salon painting, The Luncheon (1868), in The Dinner (1868-1869), and Child with a Cup, Portrait of Jean Monet (1869).
