Burst of Light – A Caravaggio Exhibit
This month the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut opened an extraordinary exhibition of Caravaggio’s legacy. Burst of Light: Caravaggio and His Legacy includes five of Caravaggio’s paintings and some thirty paintings by followers of the great Italian Baroque master, including works by Gentileschi, Ribera, Zurbarán and Sweerts.
Though he never ran a formal school, probably due to his tumultuous lifestyle, Caravaggio’s impact on artists who followed him was so great the term “Caravaggisti” was coined. Few artists have left behind a legacy so profound as that of Caravaggio.
If you’re near the Hartford area it is an exhibition not to be missed. If Hartford isn’t in your travel plans then perhaps you’d like to visit Caravaggio in Rome.
